Urdu phpBB 3.0.2 Released

April 22, 2010 in Free Software, Software/Utilities

This latest version has seen numerous stability fixes, performance tweaks and general bugs fixed.

Additionally one minor security-related bug was fixed With this release. The development team has also included the urdu version of Administration Panel.

Due to the different codebase in phpBB3, these are a lot bigger and a lot more complicated than they ever were in phpBB2 – also the reason why the team has introduced the automatic update package and automatic updater in phpBB, which is able to handle modded boards too by merging differences. Naseer does not recommend the use of the code changes tutorial – those are meant for professional users and support teams to help assist users having problems while updating.

Copy Data from Badly Damaged and Scratched CDs and DVDs

April 22, 2010 in Free Software, Software/Utilities

Many times in my life I found myself in a situation when my DVD writer stopped reading a very important CD or DVD. I am sure all of you may have seen such a irritating situation when you find no other way but to curse your CD or DVD.

Okay don’t do that anymore, because there is a solution called Copy Cat 2.0. Yes, this is an application that can recover data from your scratched CDs and DVDs. Frankly speaking, I just tested this software, and it worked great.

Remember that a physically damaged disk area cannot be copied from CD or DVD in any case. What Copy Cat does in such a situation is that if such damaged area comes between a big file then Copy Cat skips the bytes which are not readable from file and copies all other bytes.

So don’t claim that it is not copying all of your data, but I assure you that this software is going to give you back the maximum amount of data from your badly damaged CD or DVD. Another plus is that Copy Cat can also copy data from hard disk area which is partially not readable.

Unlike Windows copy operation it does not stop the copy if bad area found. It is compatible with XP and Vista and above all, it is a freeware.

Stay in Touch with Your Friends with Mobile Messeger eBuddy

April 22, 2010 in Free Software, Software/Utilities

Few of us are just crazy to chat with their friends round the clock, especially while on the go or during load shedding, when there is nothing much to do. eBuddy, provides you a luxury to chat with friends and family from mobile, even when PC/Laptop and internet are not around.

eBuddy is a java based mobile software that provides easy access to various famous instant messaging clients such as Google talk, MSN, Yahoo, MySpace, AIM etc.

After download, from m.ebuddy.com you are asked to make an eBuddy user id, which allows you to configure username/password for all of your messengers (MSN, Yahoo, Gtalk etc). And the good thing about eBuddy is that it provides a single list for all your friends belonging to different IM clients, also what makes it better is the search ability to find your friend from a long list.

Be sure that you need to have GPRS enabled on your phone. However, you don’t need to worry much about your GPRS bill, because eBuddy won’t consumer much of data while you are chatting. (Even then I suggest you to keep an eye on your data counter, or you must have a flat rate package in which you just pay monthly fee against unlimited GPRS). eBuddy also saves your GPRS data transfer by hiding offline contacts.

Protect Files Stored on Your Mobile Phone

April 22, 2010 in Free Software, Software/Utilities

In case your phone is stolen, or it is temporarily in someone’s hand, you are at great risk of loosing this private data. The situation may lead you to a very depressing state leaving you with no option but to regret. So this is the right time to better plan your personal data storage strategies.

Second best practice is to protect your files with passwords (obviously the best thing is to not keep private files on your mobile at all). For this, unfortunately, our mobile phones don’t come with folder lock options. Let me review this software for you which can hide your files and folders from others.

This software, named as “File hide” can hide your files and folders. This is a JAVA application, meaning that its compatible to variety of phone models available these days.

After downloading “File Hide” application, you will be asked to set a master password after you run the application on first place. Just select a password and restart file hide to start using it. By the way you can change this password in anytime you want.

To start protecting your files you can click on an option named as “hide” in the option menu and the file will then not be listed in the phone and can be seen only through file hide.
Good thing about “File hide” is that it is a freeware and user friendly as well.

Please note that your files will be visible when connected to computer. So this is not the ultimate solution, obviously not a desired feature, but still a good tool to hide your files on mobile phone.

Lets Talk OPEN SOURCE

April 22, 2010 in Free Software, Software/Utilities

It’s so natural to love free things…! But, it’s unnatural to get quality products for free, especially software. as people says “Free main tu bukkhar bhi nahi milta”. Though Pakistan is heavily crowded by pirated software, but we all know its not legal, and must be stopped.

So, for those who want free legal software, and that too of immense quality, let’s get familiar with OPEN SOURCE applications. But in case you can pay money to buy licensed software, you can skip this post, as you may get hurt in the end.

Let’s take Microsoft Office as an example, which costs you plenty of dollars to get registered. Also, its EXE files are not editable. Normal computer users are not concerned if EXE files are editable or not, but what if you are a programmer and want to change the layout of your Microsoft Word and its colors? Or let’s say you want to add a feature to Microsoft excel; Can you do them yourself? Answer is big NO. The reason is that its code is not editable.

However, this is not the case with open source. Let review following definitions to better understand what exactly is open source software?

“Open source application is a computer program in which the source code is available to the general public for use and/or modification from its original design free of charge.”

Another good definition is that “Open source software is a licensing model for software which gives free access to the source code of the software to allow interested parties to modify or contribute to the software as they see fit. Commonly created as collaborative projects and shared at no cost.”

You must be wondering why I am telling you all this. The reason is very simple. Most of us are copying software valuing thousands of dollars without any fear. There is no harm in it, as no one is going to catch you – but this is ethically wrong. So why to indulge ourselves into criminal activity, when there are alternates available? In fact lot better alternates.

And let me tell you something, there is open source software available for each and everything. Yea, these open source applications are being used in kids’ remote control to cars to Boeing 747 cockpit. In ps3 to Nintendo DS, mobile phones to desktops servers. (By the way ProPakistani.com is also on a linux Ubuntu server, which is lot more secure and efficient than of our previous Windows 2003 server)

To further tell you about open source applications available, let me quote Distrowatch Database (they keep record of open source application distribution etc)

DistroWatch database summary

  • Number of all distributions in the database: 582
  • Number of all active distributions in the database: 327
  • Number of discontinued distributions: 183
  • Number of distributions on the waiting list: 168

Now let’s talk about Desktops – In Pakistan people fear from using Linux because they think its old type of thing and hard black screen and all things run from there.

My friends, things have changed! Linux now a day is more users’ friendly then of Microsoft Windows. Linux is bug free comes with free support, as well as it is customizable.

Good thing is that there are tons of Linux versions (they call it distributions), such as if you are a network administrator you can chose those distributions which are good for administration tasks, if you are musician, we have just best thing for you also. In case you are a geek we have another special build distribution for you – for students in school and colleges we have treat for you people also.

Okay here is the solution for you (if you are a Symbian Mobile phone user), download this simple application called “Active SMS Lock”

ProfiMail An Email Solution While on the Go!

April 22, 2010 in Free Software, Software/Utilities

ProfiMail is an application to sort out communication solution for your mobile device whenever you encounter some technical issues in your everyday life. Wherever you go, you have your e-mail with you. With the program’s user interface, you can see a great part of the message on the screen at a time, and easily navigate during reading. You can use ProfiMail for your professional work – reading documents, sent messages, comfortably answer to sender, or send documents from the device. You can also use ProfiMail for being in touch with your friends, who use e-mail on a desktop computer. For example, you can send photos immediately, taken with the phone’s camera.

The program was designed to be as simple as possible while offering very easy control and many useful functions, essential for comfortable work with your e-mail.

I suspect that the majority of business users with Eseries devices already have either Blackberry or MS Exchange support running on the Nokia Mail client but support on other S60 devices (even other Nokia devices) has been patchy at best. The Ovi Mail roll out is not going to be popular around the world; just twelve countries will participate in the first wave.

So there is a demand for a more advanced email client, and I think that Lonely Cat Games are justified in continuing to update their application and charging the price they do. What they have here is a comprehensive email client that has the functionality of a desktop counterpart and provides the end user with a heap of functionality. It means all you need is your own mailbox and your phone Of course.

On opening ProfiMail for the first time, you have to update a simple configuration system, asking for details such as your email address, and then presenting you with a pre-populated ‘edit account’ screen. I added my GMail address and ProfiMail spotted the domain and added in all the correct details and settings. That’s slick, and very much appreciated.
Of course, in the case of GMail you do need to have IMAP access, enabled in your account, but this is a single setting and everyone should have on by default in any case.

Version 3 of ProfiMail adds a lot of features, but probably the main feature is IMAP IDLE. Alongside POP3, IMAP is a way to access your email accounts that are online – directly. Where POP3 is much more a snapshot copy of an email inbox, IMAP allows you to work with folders and messages in the mailbox directly. If you use multiple devices, having an organized email system (such as GMail and its tags) IMAP is perfect for you. Changes made (such as dragging a file from the Inbox to ‘Family’ folder) happen immediately on the server, not just on your device. So when you login from another device (or a web interface) the changes are still there.

IMAP IDLE is a form of push email, so if you connect using this (as opposed to just regular IMAP), whenever the server receives an update to the mail box (be it the inbox or other folders), the changes are passed to the connected IMAP client, with no interaction required from the user. In other words it’s really very advanced what you’d expect of a “push email” system, although you do need to be connected to get the updates.

If you’ve looked at the screenshots then you’ll be able to guess why I love ProfiMail. Yes, that’s right; they’re using a nice tiny font which allows me to see seven email headers, and the first few lines of an email in the text box below. One click and you’re taken through to a full screen view of the email.

The font is not very pretty; I can live with an old-fashioned terminal-like ugly font if it gives me another line of text. I’ll readily admit that view may not be prevalent in the marketplace, and certainly looking at the slick and GUI rich experiences on other devices I wonder just how long ProfiMail can sell itself as a service without the frilly lace edges.
ProfiMail accesses the contacts detail on the phone, but from inside the UI. Given that ProfiMail has thrown the style guide for S60 out the window to ensure the maximum amount of information can be presented, this integration is good. Having to jump back to the S60 style would be a little bit jarring.

This choice, to change the UI, gives ProfiMail much more flexibility to do what a good email client needs to do, and because this is clearly going to be used by power users, they get away with the changes. There’s still enough residual knowledge (i.e. the right key is usually back/close/exit and the left soft key calls up a cascading menu), that it’s not that difficult to work out what’s going on.

Not surprisingly, for an application that delivers almost desktop-like features, there are a lot of options and settings. The first hurdle, setting up your account, is basically monitored by the aforementioned wizard, while other settings are kept in a ‘Tools’ branch off the menu under the left soft key, where you’ll find options for the onscreen data/bandwidth counters, email rules, and check for updates to the program itself.

Where ProfiMail wins over the built in messaging client, even if the user has Blackberry or similar support installed, is in the rules. You can use these to decide which emails to download (for example always download email where the address starts with ‘jamil’ or ‘aamir’, never download mail to my mobile from “amina”, stop any mail that’s over 100K, etc.)

Congratulation alert messages are delivered here for ProfiMail’s support of attachments and files that come along with any email. It has a built in image viewer for most popular image formats (including JPG and PNG) with a built in viewer (see above). It also handles HTML, formatted email inside the application, rather than pass out the code to an instance of the web browser. It’s not perfect (the above HTML mail should have the word ProfiMail in the text a lot larger), but it does present readable messages – which are very important for me, Information over presentation, remember. Finally, to help with attachments, there is a built-in file browser that lets you to save and load files from the phone’s memory.

While there are other third party email clients, the direct comparison for Profimail will be with the built-in client on S60 devices, which surpasses it by its functionality. If you need corporate support (MS Exchange, Blackberry, Lotus Domino, etc.) you will need to stick with Nokia Messaging, so that limits the potential somewhat, as those users may be categorized under the advanced email clients. Power users, especially those with active online lives, will appreciate ProfiMail, but as the competition catch up, and new ways of using email and IM to communicate appear, Lonely Cat Games are going to develop for updating the application.

Mobile VOIP in Pakistan

April 21, 2010 in Free Software, Software/Utilities

Voice over IP is nothing new in Pakistan from – VOIP has played an important role for people to stay close to those who are far away from them. In the current times when life is becoming more mobile, keeping oneself attached to PC, is very cumbersome and the increasing power crises in the country makes it more difficult to use it.

Here comes VOIP on mobile, supported by SKYPE and Fring. This Fring is free software which supports to use SKYPE with ease, just register once and you can talk away any where you are – all you need is a supporting cell phone and data cable connection.

Fring is versatile, it’s not limited only to high end phones, from Nokia 1680 to Nokia N97, from Symbian to UIQ to Windows Mobile and iPhone, it works on every kind of cell phones effortlessly.

There are a lot of advantages of VOIP, as international phone calls from Pakistan is almost free but here is a need to pay charges for calling to Pakistan. With Mobile VOIP, a businessman can have his worldwide associates call him over on his SKYPE id whether he is in office or lounging at home, a family can talk away via speaker phone with their loved ones abroad even if the lights are out, for me I use it for a different purpose, I use it as a one click solution for my kids to contact me wherever I am thorough their PC.

Those concerned with security can sleep easy, it’s rumored that only NASA has the technology to listen over SKYPE and that too will take much of their precious super computer time to hack into the conversation.

Getting Fring is easy, just go to www.fring.com and click on download or send yourself software by SMS or go to m.fring.com on your cell phone . You can register online and add the required services , Fring is not limited to SKYPE , it has a whole slew of applications like MSN , Yahoo Char , AIM , Twitter 2.0 , Face Book , Google Talk, SIP Phone , ICQ , Orkut , Yandex , Last FM and access to one email account . So Fring is your all in one communications suite which does the job wonderfully and best of all it’s free.

While starting with Fring, all you need is to register once, enter the logins and passwords of all the services, you need to access and forget about it, the software runs in the background, notifying when a new message or call is received.

Now you can be in touch anywhere and everywhere all you need is Fring and SKYPE.

Any Video Converter Inter Convert Any Video File

April 21, 2010 in Free Software, Software/Utilities

Purpose: It is an application to inter convert video file formats
License: Free
Operating Systems: Windows Vista, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 98
Additional Requirements: No additional requirements
Limitations: No limitations
Date Released: May 22 2009
Download Link: Download

There are various applications that can be used to play video files in all the possible formats. For instance some applications can play real media and MPEG files both at the same time in the same play list. However, this compatibility is not mentioned in compatible playing devices. For instance in MP3 players, real audio files are not supported. Hence this requires file conversion.

Any Video converter is a very handy application. It can simply convert video files from any input format to the desirable format. The user does not have to do anything irritating and tiring like the inclusion of a file path. He simply has to click the browse option and select the file from the desired location. After the file has been selected, it is required that the desired output format is selected.

Now let us have a look at the negative results that the application has: At times, very long duration is required to convert the files carrying a complex format. Some times the conversion process does not complete successfully and the files cannot be played as well.

This is not a usual process but in the conversion process of complex formats, the user is not that satisfied. The files converted do not have a very high quality standard. The conversion speed for simple formats is very high. Some of the files are even converted in less than a minute. However this is not the usual case.

Now let’s discuss the interface of the application. The interface is not that good of colorful. It is a very basic application in terms of design. There is nothing hi-tech or exceptionally appearing.

MOV is a format that takes a very high time duration and other than that also has a low success rate. MOV is not a wide supported format. Most of the players using this format are heavy in terms of file size. They are also hard to download and play. We can say that the application supports only limited formats in a comfortable manner. For instance, DIV X is a format that troubles the most. As it is a video format for DVD files. Hence the conversion duration is very long and time consuming. The user has to wait a lot for the file to be converted.

In most of the cases, an error is generated saying that the file is corrupt. The memory space required by the application is an advantage.

This is a very light application and does not require a high amount of memory space as well. The download process is simple and the user only has to follow the instructions provided. There is no requirement for entering the file path manually. By default, the selected location is the user desktop. Hence the user can change the location when he does not want his desktop to be over occupied

Conclusion:

The application is good but not a selection option if a better substitute is available. The only positive aspects are simple file conversions.
